Biography

Kerry Wales is a professional artist living in the Horowhenua area of New Zealand. In the sixties he studied art at the Brera Academy in Milan and spent a great deal of time painting, sculpting and sketching the Italian landscape and people.

He later returned to Italy and lived for several years in Rome teaching and painting. He had his studio in the Via Nazionale from where he sold most of his work and has held exhibitions in Rome and in Wellington and Auckland.

An artist of the old school, he has worked through a wide variety of media and concepts. Most of his earlier work centred around oil paintings of a completely abstract nature yet in recent years his attention has turned away from the abstract and he now delights in capturing the true beauty of nature.

A recognised New Zealand designer, Kerry is known to many Wellingtonians for fine furniture and also throughout the country for his many pencil sketches of beautiful houses and buildings.

Kerry Wales is a realist and his depth of appreciation can clearly be seen in the detail of the portrait and landscape oil paintings he is currently producing as well as in his sculptures of the human figure. He works in bronze and in fired clay producing single one-offs and limited edition pieces in both media, however at this stage he prefers to devote his time almost entirely to oil painting which he is currently teaching and offering regular classes to both beginner and already established artists.
